FAQS
1. What is a porcelain Veneer?
A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that is glued over an existing tooth to enhance its appearance.
2. Who is suitable?
-Patients who have dark, very discoloured teeth that are unsuitable for bleaching.
-Patients who have very discoloured large fillings at the front of the mouth and want a smile enhancement with whiter better-looking teeth.
-Patients who have large spaces between their teeth and braces cannot alleviate them.

3. Who is not suitable
- Patients with well aligned teeth which show slight discolouration, these cases are better treated with tooth whitening.
- Patients with severe crowding / rotation of the teeth: these patients will require braces (orthodontics)
- Patients who do not want any tooth enamel removed (most porcelain veneers require removal of some tooth enamel) these patients are often better with composite resin veneers which may remove no tooth enamel.

4. What is involved in the process?
Usually 3 appointments are necessary:
1. An assessment by the treating dentist where a full explanation is given to the patients of the likely outcomes, suitability of treatment and the patients expectations.
2. Preparation visit: Where the teeth are prepared to allow room for the porcelain veneers to be fitted over the teeth. NOTE: at this stage up to 20% of the existing tooth may be required to be removed. This allows optimal strength and appearance of the veneers.
3. Approximately 2 weeks later, after the laboratory has fabricated custom made veneers they are cemented/glued onto your teeth permanently.

5.How long do the veneers last?
On average approximately 8 years but they may last much longer. Porcelain, like tooth enamel can chip.

Microfil Composite Resin Veneers
These are veneers done with a different material than porcelain. These veneers have advantages and disadvantages when compared to porcelain veneers:-

Advantages of composite veneers Vs Porcelain
1. Approximately half the cost of porcelain
2. Little or no tooth enamel is removed when placing a resin veneer
3. Usually all resin veneers are placed in a single visit.

Advantages of porcelain over resin veneers
1. The porcelain veneers is the gold standard in appearance. It also is extremely stain resistant so over time it maintains is appearance much better than composite.
2. The extreme smoothness and gloss of porcelain makes maintenance and cleaning easier than resin veneers.
